Required Continuing Education Hours

Life and Health Producers

15 CE hours, including 1 hour of ethics, are required every year.

Property and Casualty Producers

15 CE hours, including 1 hour of ethics, are required every year.

License Term

The license term is every year ending on September 30th.

Nonresident CE Requirements

Nonresident licensees that do not complete CE in their home state must complete New Mexico’s CE requirements.

CE Subject Requirements

Producers must complete 1 hour in approved ethics courses. All other hours may be completed by taking courses approved only for the line of authority licensed for.

Final Exam Requirements

Self-study final exams DO NOT require a monitor. Self-study final exams are open book. Producers may refer to the course material as often as needed. The final exam must be passed with a score of 70 percent or higher to receive credit. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

CE Carryover Allowance

No excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next license term.

Course Repetition Rules

A course may not be taken for credit more than once within 3 years from the original completion date.

Certificate of Completion

AOIS provides online, printable certificates of completion in New Mexico. Certificates of completion will be available immediately after the final exam is passed. Producers must keep a copy of each certificate of completion in his or her files for 3 years.

CE Completion Reporting

AOIS does NOT report CE course completions to the New Mexico Insurance Division. Producers are required to report CE course completions to the state on the verified statement form prescribed by the state as well as submitting the original certificates of completion.

License Renewal Process

Producers must submit the original certificates of completion, along with a $1.00 per credit hour fee, directly to the New Mexico Insurance Division prior to the license expiration date.

CE Exemptions

Producers are exempt from continuing education if one of the following is true:

  • The producer holds a limited license.

  • The producer has been an agent, solicitor, nonresident agent, or nonresident broker for 25 years or more.

  • The producer maintains a license solely for the purposes of receiving renewal fee residuals and does not otherwise transact the business of insurance.

  • The producer is an agent of a fraternal benefit society.

  • The nonresident producer has met the CE requirements of his or her home state.
